Terms and Conditions

This site describes the terms and conditions under which I offer statistical services. It is required that the primary investigator / project leader agrees with the terms and conditions.

Analysis of your data is free of charge. When you and me decide to work together, we will collaborate as scientific partners and publish the data together as co-authors.

Before we work together:

Because we will be partners and my name will be on the manuscript, it is essential that we can trust in each other's abilities and integrity. I will make an assessment of the scientific quality of the project and of your integrity as a researcher before I agree to collaborate. This doesn't mean that your research has to be a potential candidate for a Nobel Prize, but I would not work together with you if the research is low quality (mainly, because it is not possible to draw useful conclusions from low quality research with substantial flaws...). Other reasons why I would not work together with you are a lack of trust in your scientific integrity, or simply, lack of time. When I work together with you, I want to make sure that I have enough time to do so, and it would not be fair to accept new collaborations without being able to commit enough time to the project.

When we have agreed to work together:

You (as primary investigator and/or research group):

  • agree to add me as a co-author on the manuscript(s), on whatever position you determine appropriate
  • agree to list my current affiliation (see contact) to the manuscript(s)
  • provide a research protocol, raw data as well as all other information and support which I need to fulfil my part of the collaboration
  • put me in the position to comply with ICMJE authorship requirements as described below, specifically, send me draft copies of the manuscript such that I can revise them for important intellectual content as well as a copy of the final version before submission
  • are primarily responsible for planning and execution of the study, including obtaining the relevant permissions and funding (if required)
  • will not charge any costs or will have any financial claims against me for my participation in your research project
  • will not hold me responsible for rejection of your manuscript
  • will not terminate the collaboration before the work is published

I (as medical statistician):

  • provide statistical services as described on my website, including assistance with the planning of the study as well as analysis and interpretation of the data
  • will not charge any costs
  • will not pass on any of your data, results, research protocols, intellectual property or other material to third parties without your prior permission
  • will not publish any of your material by myself without your prior permission
  • will comply with ICMJE authorship requirements, which are based on 4 criteria:
    1. "Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work" AND
    2. "Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content" AND
    3. "Final approval of the version to be published" AND
    4. "Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved

With respect to criterion 1, I will make substantial contributions to the analysis and interpretation of the data, and, if you contact me early enough, I will also contribute substantially to the conception and design of the study. With respect to criterion 2, I will draft the statistical methods part of the manuscript, will provide figures and tables for the results section, will provide interpretations and conclusions that can be used in the discussion, and will critically revise the entire manuscript for important intellectual content. With respect to criterion 3 (and to make sure that all statistical analyses, results and conclusions for which I'm responsible are correctly described), I insist to read the final version of the manuscript before submission. With respect to criterion 4, I will ensure that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved. In fact, if doubts in the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work cannot be adequately resolved, this would be a reason to terminate the collaboration immediately.
